The petting zoo
The hay wagon tour is about distance and scale. The petting zoo is about slowing down and letting the kids meet an animal nose-to-nose.
We added the petting zoo section a few years after we started opening the ranch to the public, because kids wanted a way to actually touch an animal — not just see one from a wagon. Since then, it's become the part of the day most families ask for twice.
Who you'll meet
Our petting zoo hosts a rotating cast of friendlier species — the ones that thrive on human attention and are comfortable being fed and handled by kids. Because we're a working ranch with seasons and schedules, the specific lineup varies through the year. Regulars include goats, donkeys, Highland cattle, calves, rabbits, and peafowl. Call ahead if you want to know what's out on the day you're coming.
How to have a good visit
- Wash up before and after. There are wash stations on site. Use them — it's good for you and the animals.
- Go slow. Even the tamest animal is still an animal. Crouch down, let them come to you, and don't grab.
- Watch your snacks. The goats in particular will absolutely investigate a stroller pocket. Keep your own food put away.
- Only feed what we provide. If we've got feed available for that day's animals, we'll let you know. Please don't bring food from home to feed them — a zucchini from your garden is a nice idea that causes us real problems.
For first-timers
If this is your child's first time around livestock, it's normal for them to be nervous. Start at the fence, let them watch for a few minutes, and follow their lead. Our staff and family members are usually nearby if you have questions about any of the animals — ask. We like talking about them.
